LPGA*USGA GNGG Highlights from 2019-2021

Greater Newark Girls Golf continued to grow the game during the 2020 season. With the technical knowledge of Debbie O’Connell and creativity of Debbie and Sandra Jaskol our LPGA professionals, virtual lessons were delivered free  to over forty girls. They were taught how to improve their golf skills using household items. The girls followed the lessons via iPad and laptops in their living rooms and backyards. The eleaders (senior girls) developed theme clinics to maintain the girls’ interest and to develop their knowledge of the history of golf.  Please find enclosed a picture of a virtual session from 2020.

Greater Newark is known for having the best coach to junior ratio in comparison to other area golf clinics. When the in-person clinics resumed for the 2021 season at the Galloping Hill Learning Center, we adapted to the new COVID guidelines, and our program thrived. Registration was limited to four girls per coach. Two LPGA professionals, an apprentice and 8 volunteer coaches led a successful season. We were pleased to welcome Kemper’s participation when Greg Ward, Director of Sales and Marketing, and a former PGA Class A professional joined our volunteer staff.

Two Greater Newark graduates participated in our Speaker/Mentor program. Janeyce McCray, a freshman at Occidental College in California, and Annie Cierra, a sophomore at the University of Andrews in Scotland, relayed their college golf team experiences. Anna Turner, minority business owner, and Women’s Golf Association of New Jersey golf champion, engaged the girls with a narrative on her entrance into the golf world as a corporate executive. Gianna Rojas, owner of Adaptive Golfer, amazed the juniors as they queried her ability to master the game of golf with the use of one hand. In addition to the 3-month weekly clinics, and on course play at the Galloping Hill 9-hole course, our Pitch and Putt league resumed at Ash Brook Golf Course.  Sandra Jaskol assisted by the eleaders, and volunteers coached the girls as they played in threesomes.  We celebrated the accomplishments of Megha Ganne, as she played in the U.S. Women’s Open as the top amateur golfer.  Megha began her golf lessons with Greater Newark and attributes her success to Greater Newark Girls Golf!  Please visit our website to see her presentation to our juniors.

In 2020/21 Greater Newark Girls Golf was recognized by national LPGA with the Sandy LaBauve Grant to help offset a portion of the expenses incurred in connection with improving the quality of LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Sites.

In October 2021 Greater Newark transported the girls to the junior golf clinic at the LPGA Cognizant Founders Day at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, New Jersey.  Kennedy Nolan and Jada Fowlkes, two our senior players, participated in the Pro-Am.
